Organic Chemical Contaminants

The presence of toxic chemicals at various concentrations has been widely documented in many water supplies. Detection can be difficult as these contaminants often have no taste or odour. Treatment depends on type and concentration. These chemicals may be industrial solvents or agricultural pesticides and herbicides. One of the most common is Trihalomethane (THM) which is formed when chlorine in the water reacts with natural organic matter.

EPA Supports WQA Position on Softener Discharges into On-site Septic System

The EPA recently issued an extremely positive document entitled Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Special Issues Fact Sheet 3—Water Softeners.* This document supports WQA’s position that the discharge of softener wastes is not harmful to septic systems. Scientific studies from the University of Wisconsin, NSF International, Ohio State University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the American Society of Agricultural Engineers are referenced in the fact sheet.

The Wisconsin and NSF research studies were funded by the Water Quality Research Council (WQRC), and, gratifyingly, the three main EPA conclusion points are taken directly from those two works.
