Nitrates/Nitrites in my water

Why should we be concerned with nitrites and nitrates in our drinking water?  Well, according to the EPA, excessive levels will cause serious illness, even death.  Children are at most risk because it interferes with the oxygen-carrying capacity of their blood.  It can cause shortness of breath and blueness of the skin.

Nitrates/Nitrites have no detectable color, taste, or smell; they do not cause discoloration of plumbing fixtures, so they remain undetectable to our senses.

We have several options that provide high quality water to treat this issue.  Contact us to learn more at 480-892-7556.

Got a Well? Get it Tested!

Well water can be very tricky.

In Arizona, we have volcanic rock that produces high levels of arsenic - especially in New River, Cave Creek, and other parts of Northern Phoenix.  We also have parts of the valley that have high chlorides and sulfates.  These are just a few issues that pose tricky problems with our water.

Arsenic cannot not be detected.  You can’t smell, taste, or see it.   And traditional methods do not always take care of the problem.

Chlorides and sulfates pose concerns because they show up on your pipes and cause corrosion.  However, commonly water treatment specialist address this problem with a large water softener and it can’t fix the problem.

I have countless clients that have had these 3 specific issues and have spent countless amounts of money trying to fix it with solutions that just don’t work.  We utilize our experienced engineers and water treatment specialists to design specific solutions that are guaranteed to provide high quality water you can trust.  We can help with the first step: testing your water with a trusted lab like Legend Technical Services and Aquatic Consulting.

Do I really need a salt system to soften my water?

Are water softeners really worth their salt?  Why can’t we condition water with a salt-free system instead?   Doesn’t a water softener make my water taste salty?  Isn’t salt bad for the environment?

Really good questions.

EcoWater System’s water softeners and refiners are definitely worth the small amount of salt for many reasons.  First of all, let’s make it clear, our units are highly efficient and designed NOT to waste salt, water, or electricity.  Without having our water treatment installed in your home, you’ll find that your water heater, dishwasher, and washer machine will corrode, leak, and fail.  Hard water is very destructive to these appliances and soft, clean water is a great way to not only maintain their integrity, but their energy efficiencies as well.

We can provide soft, conditioned water without salt.  All About Water specializes in unique membrane technologies, such as whole house reverse osmosis or nanofiltration.  Ionic exchange (the way a traditional water softener functions) and membrane technologies are the only tried and true ways to soften and condition water.  No-salt systems that treat water via magnets, electricity, de-scaling, or filter have no testing or validation by NSF or WQA.  Third party certification is truly important.  Don’t be fooled by salt-free water systems that are anything other then ionic exchange or membrane treated.

Okay, so salt isn’t sounding so awful, but you are still worried that it will make your water taste terrible.  EcoWater Systems water softeners and refiners use such a minute amount of salt, that it cannot be measured inside the home.  In fact, our refiners are NSF certified as DRINKING WATER!  Of course there are systems on the market that will make your water taste funny, so it is important you research the company.  Not sure where to start, check out Rosie on the House.

Lastly, it is important to protect our environment.  Water softeners are not as menacing as they are made out to be.  In fact, the harsh chemicals we use to wash, laundry, and clean with are more menacing then the small amount of brine that is added to our water and soil.  Did you know that water softeners considerably cut down on the usage of these cleaning supplies?  Furthermore, clean pure detergents work wonderfully with soft, clean water.  Don’t believe the hype.  In the end, water softeners and refiners are one of the greenest appliances in our homes.

Selenium in drinking water

Selenium has been a hot topic the past few months.  We have had a few recent clients with levels of selenium so high that it had to be removed throughout the entire home.  There are few ways to remove or greatly reduce the amount of selenium in your water.  We trust our selective membrane technology, but anion exchange can be utilized as well.

So what exactly is selenium and why should I be concerned about it?

Selenium is a naturally occurring element that is typically found in soil, mineral deposits, water, and even some foods.  In small doses, it is an essential element that helps to function tour metabolic pathways in the human body.  That said, it is usually found in photoelectric cells - like a TV, camera, copy machine - or in our anti-dandruff shampoos.

EPA recommends that our drinking water be under 0.05 mg/L.  Short term exposure can cause hair and fingernail issues, damage the nervous system, and bring fatigue or irritability.  The longer term affects can cause fingernail and hair loss and damage to vital organs, like our kidneys or liver.

Can you really blame water softeners for adding salt into our municipalities?

Does your water softener really add so much salt to our water supplies that it should be banned?

According to several studies, including the recent findings of Battelle Memorial Institute, absolutely not.  According to this study, they discovered that water softeners are one of the greenest household appliances.  They also found that appliances with Energy Star ratings immediately lose their efficiency ratings when used on hard water.

The mis-perceived notion that water softeners are ruining soil and our water supply is just unfounded.  It is very easy to play off fears that water softeners are adding a lot of salt into our environment.  But with new technologies, you’ll find they waste less water then your dishwasher or washing machine.  EcoWater Systems utilizes a unique algorithm that only cleans the resin that is dirty.  This efficient method is the greenest of it’s kind.  The amount of salt added to our environment is minimal.  Naturally, our water already has a great deal of salt.

Ionic exchange and membrane technology are the only tried and true ways to truly soften your water.  Don’t get caught up in the hype of salt-free systems.  They just don’t work and as the legislation becomes more educated, these scare tactics will go away.

Nitrate + Nitrite

Nitrates/nitrites can be very difficult to remove from the water when they are excessively high.  The EPA also states that long term exposure can result in diuresis (increased starchy deposits and hemorrhaging of the spleen).  Nitrates/nitrites can also interfere with the oxygen-carrying capacity of children’s blood.  There are special medias designed to remove them and if you have elevated levels, please contact us so we can help.

Troubled Well Water

When you have a well, it is important you have it tested.  I recommend a large scope of tests, not the simple EPA standards.  It is important to know how high your total dissolved solids are and what they are.  TDS includes heavy metals (such as arsenic or copper), hardness minerals (such as calcium or magnesium), and much more.  It is important to know your pH, nitrates/nitrites, and bacteria as well.  Once you are informed, then you can make a proper decision on treating your water.  Commonly people think a softener or under the sink reverse osmosis is the way to go and it isn’t.  pH can affect the way filters function and there are certain things in our water that show as hardness when they are really not.  All About Water has specialized in well water treatment for years.  We utilize our engineers to custom design a specific system to treat your needs when common water treatment isn’t the answer.  We usually get called after a homeowner has spent thousands of dollars on water systems that just aren’t the fit.  Before spending money on fixing your water, get it tested.  Then call us to help you fix it!  We will gladly help you arrange for your water testing.  We proudly use Aquatic Consulting and Legend Technical Services.  To get you started simply call 480-892-7556.
