Why a water softener

We call water “hard” if it contains a lot of calcium or magnesium dissolved in it. Hard water causes two problems:

  • It can cause “scale” to form on the inside of pipes, water heaters, tea kettles and so on. The calcium and magnesium precipitate out of the water and stick to things. The scale doesn’t conduct heat well and it also reduces the flow through pipes. Eventually, pipes can become completely clogged.
  • It reacts with soap to form a sticky scum, and also reduces the soap’s ability to lather. Since most of us like to wash with soap, hard water makes a bath or shower less productive

Water Related Pseudoscience

“Magnets and “catalysts” for softening water, magnetic laundry balls, waters that are “oxygenated”, “clustered”, “ionized” or “vitalized” (purporting to improve cellular hydration, remove toxins, and repair DNA), high zeta-potential colloids and vortex-treated waters to raise your energy levels, halt or reverse ageing and prevent cancer — all of these wonders and more are being aggressively marketed via the Internet, radio infomercials, seminars, and by various purveyors of new-age nonsense. The hucksters who promote these largely worthless products weave a web of pseudoscientific hype guaranteed to dazzle and confuse the large segment of the public whose limited understanding of science makes them especially vulnerable to this kind of exploitation.

The purpose of this site is to examine the credibility of these claims from the standpoint of our present-day understanding of science. The latter, of course, is always evolving and is never complete, but it makes an excellent “B.S. filter” that is almost always reliable. It is hoped that the information presented here will help consumers make more informed decisions before offering up their credit cards to those in the business of flogging pseudoscience.”

Magnetic & Catalytic Water Softeners

Many companies are the purveyors of “salt-free” water softeners. Over the years there has been an on-going controversy as to whether or not these systems actually function to soften or improve water quality.  There has been no available testing or validation to evaluate and protect the consumer from being taken advantage of.Our company does not recommend this equipment , however you might take a look at our available water treatment products. All of out EcoWater products have third party validations and have been tested and certified.

EPA Supports WQA Position on Softener Discharges into On-site Septic System

The EPA recently issued an extremely positive document entitled Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Special Issues Fact Sheet 3—Water Softeners.* This document supports WQA’s position that the discharge of softener wastes is not harmful to septic systems. Scientific studies from the University of Wisconsin, NSF International, Ohio State University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the American Society of Agricultural Engineers are referenced in the fact sheet.

The Wisconsin and NSF research studies were funded by the Water Quality Research Council (WQRC), and, gratifyingly, the three main EPA conclusion points are taken directly from those two works.

I have heard that soft water feel different, even slimy in the beginning is this true?

Q: I have heard that soft water feel different, even slimy in the beginning is this true?

A: Yes, soft water does feel different. Soft water does not contain the two hardness minerals calcium and magnesium which adheres to your skin, stripping it of its natural oils.  It is necessary to make some adjustments after installing a water softener, use ½ the normal measurement of soaps, detergents and shampoos.  If soft water is difficult to get used to, hard water can be blended in and gradually reduced.
