Rainwater Collection Systems

Living in the desert, water conservation is very important.  If you have ever had concerns with water shortages, harvesting rain water can provide the relief you are looking for.  This is a great way to provide a second source or backup to city water.  In Tucson, all new commercial constructions is required that at least 50% of their irrigation needs come from rainwater harvesting (RWH).  This also helps to lower the total demand from conventional sources.  This is a great way to be very green and responsible to our natural resources.

How do I get rid of bacteria in my well water?

I have received many calls lately on various well water concerns.  The most recent came from a client with coliform issues.  To disinfect water there a couple options.

The long time option that most people find reliable is chlorine.  This is an efficient way to get rid of bacteria, but because it poses issues with bathing and other concerns, it is highly recommended that it be removed.  So basically, you will have a chlorine water treatment system located at the well and then before the water enters the house, you’ll have the water go through a Central Water System. You receive the benefits of the bacteria, coliforms, e.coli, ect removed from the water without the side effects of the damaging chlorine.

There is also another option that is slowly gaining popularity: hydrogen peroxide.  It provides the effective disinfectant factor and according to WQP, it is also effective in treating nontoxic water contaminants such as iron and sulfur.  The downside to hydrogen peroxide is the handling factor.  Usage and storage need to be taken very seriously.

Iron: The Pesty Metal

Iron in our water can really destroy our homes.  There are a few ways iron can successfully be removed your water.

When you are dealing with low levels of iron, softeners can be very effective.  BIRM (basic iron removal media) is another practical way to remove lower levels of iron.  But for this media to be most effective, the iron cannot exceed 10ppm, dissolved oxygen has to be 15% of the iron present, flow rates and water pressure also need to meet specific standards.  The great aspect of BIRM is that it requires little maintenance and needs backwashed only.  There are no chemicals needed when regenerated properly and it lasts a long time.

It is important to look for a good water treatment specialist, like All About Water, to determine what type of solution will best take care of your iron problems.
